The new Lucknow franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has included former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir in its support staff. Two-time IPL winning captain Gambhir will join the Lucknow team as a mentor. Lucknow franchise owner Sanji Goenka confirmed this on Saturday. He said, ‘Yes, we have tied up with them. Gambhir, the BJP MP from East Delhi, has led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles under his captaincy.

Gambhir’s appointment is the second major announcement by Goenka’s RPSG Group, which had bought the franchise in October for Rs 7090 crore. Gambhir, the former Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals captain, will now work with Lucknow coach Andy Flower, who was recently appointed the head coach of the team. In IPL 2022, the battle for the title will be between 10 franchise teams instead of eight. Two new franchise teams from Lucknow and Ahmedabad will enter the field. The Lucknow team has recently appointed former Zimbabwe captain and star cricketer Andy Flower as the head coach. For IPL 2022, eight old franchise teams have released the names of their retained players, while two new franchise teams can add three players before the mega auction.

Apart from Gambhir, his Delhi and Kolkata Knight Riders teammate Vijay Dahiya is also associated with the Lucknow franchise. Former India wicketkeeper Dahiya is expected to join as the team’s assistant coach. Dahiya is currently the head coach of the Uttar Pradesh state team. 40-year-old Gambhir is currently a ruling BJP MP at the Centre. Gambhir has played 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20 matches in his illustrious international career spanning nine years. He played in IPL for 10 seasons and during this, he represented Delhi and Kolkata teams in 154 matches.

After becoming the mentor of the new Lucknow franchise of IPL, Gambhir said in a statement on social media, “Thank you to Dr (Sanjeev) Goenka and RPSG Group for giving me this wonderful opportunity in their team. The spirit of winning the match is still intact in me. The desire to leave a legacy of a conqueror still lingers in me round the clock. I will not fight for the dressing room but for the team of Uttar Pradesh. Franchise owner Sanjeev Goenka has also welcomed Gambhir into the RPSG family.
