After the detection of a new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, many countries, including Britain, have imposed travel restrictions on South Africa. Unhappy over the imposition of travel restrictions by foreign countries, South Africa said on Saturday it was being punished for finding variants through advanced genome sequencing. South Africa further said that due to this, the risk of damage to tourism, the rest of the economy has increased. After the detection of the new variant, many countries including Britain, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Netherlands, America, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Brazil have banned flights to African countries.

South Africa has some of the world’s top epidemiologists and scientists, who have been able to identify this new type of coronavirus. The Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa and has since been confirmed in Belgium, Botswana, Israel, and Hong Kong. South Africa’s Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation said this new round of travel restrictions is punishing South Africa for its advanced genome sequencing and ability to detect new variants.

The ministry further said that good science should be appreciated and not punished. In fact, on Friday and Saturday, several countries announced travel restrictions in South Africa and other countries in the region. South Africa’s foreign ministry said that new variants of corona had been detected in other countries as well, but the global response to those countries was quite different from that of South Africa. A team of scientists in South Africa announced this new variant of the coronavirus on Wednesday. The scientists said they had discovered a variant that could possibly evade the body’s immune response and that it could spread faster than the rest of the variant.
