Short-video sharing platform TikTok has overtaken Google to become the most popular domain at the end of 2021, according to data released by Web security and performance company Cloudflare. These two were followed by the domain names of tech giants Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, and WhatsApp.
The report claims that this is a huge jump, as TikTok was nowhere near Google in 2020. In 2020, Google topped the chart, followed by Facebook and Microsoft. However, Tiktok remained in seventh place. The Facebook-owned Instagram domain, which was ranked 9th last year, dropped out of the top-10 list this year.
As per the Cloudflare report, TikTok remained in the top position for a day for the first time on February 17, 2021. After this, in March and May, TikTok got a chance for a few more days, but after August 10, 2021, Tiktok led on most of the days.
“There were some days when Google was #1, but October and November were mostly TikTok days, including Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26),” the report said.
Most Popular Domains of 2021 (Finally)
Notably, Tiktok has been banned in India for security reasons.
The report noted that Facebook domains were consistent #2 in 2020, but Facebook is now a solid #3 with TikTok, followed by Microsoft (includes Office 365 and Teams numbers) and apple.com (the App Store and Apple). TV+ numbers are included).
The report said that since January 2021, Amazon has leapfrogged Apple. But Apple is back after September, with a few exceptions like November 28, 2021, the day before Cyber Monday – and December 1 and 6.
The report said that Netflix even surpassed Amazon in December 2020, especially around Christmas Week. In the few days around Christmas 2020, Netflix was even higher than Apple, in #4, i.e. from December 23, December 25, and December 29 to January 2, 2021.
The social media domain also ranked high on the Cloudflare rankings. Nine main social media apps were in the Top 100 list of most popular global domains – only one being Quora.com (it was between #687 and #242 during 2021). In this list too, Tiktok tops the chart, followed by Facebook and YouTube.
